Concert Description:
Duo Diorama is Chinese violinist MingHuan Xu and Canadian pianist Winston Choi. A “Diorama” is a scene or story reproduced on cloth transparencies with various lights shining through to produce changes in effect. In the case of Duo Diorama, the musicians’ performances create an illusion of colour and three-dimensionality, transporting the listener to another time and place. They bring dazzling virtuosity to very challenging and complex new music-- performances full of fluidity, expressiveness, and musicality, bringing out the subtle melodic beauties of each work as well as its architectural and structural strengths. In this concert, featuring many Winnipeg premieres, they'll play music by Xenakis, Ferneyhough, Cheng, Daniel, Zupka and Weymouth, as well as a recent piece by Michael Matthews and a world premiere by Jim Hiscott. Duo Diorama brings a startlingly fresh and powerful approach to music for violin and piano.
Performers:
MingHuan Xu, violin
Winston Choi, piano

Keith Dyck Band/Deuxieme Take

Keith Dyck Band/Deuxieme Take
Event Link
Keith Dyck Band
www.myspace.com/keithdyck
The singer-songwriter guitarist (and player of a number of stringed and other instruments) Keith Dyck has been making magic and music all of his life. The product of a musical family, Keith spent most of his childhood playing every instrument he could put his hands on and learned to play literally at his father’s knee. Family get-togethers often turned to hootenannies led by the strumming of the banjo and a number of other instruments.
Keith has performed solo on stage at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, at Winnipeg’s West End Cultural Centre and in many other Winnipeg venues. He has also taken his music from Vancouver Island to Nova Scotia to Corpus Christi, Texas, disspelling the myth that the Kerouac adventure was but a dream.
Keith has opened for the likes of the Crash Test Dummies, the Tragically Hip, Martin Sexton, the Bad Livers, Greg Brown, the Arrogant Worms, and the audience response was always undeniably YA HOO! He is respected among local musicians and has often played with other songwriters, including Richard Moody, the D-Rangers, Scott Nolan, to name but a few and has collaborated on projects all over the place. This February also has him trekking out to Whitehorse for The Frostbite Festival.
Keith Dyck’s energy, willingness and “vibe” extend far beyond the stage and enrich any event of which he is part. He is an awful lot of fun as a skilled and creative performer…as well as an inventor. You wan’t want to miss his own concoction of Electroacoustic /Surf /Folk rock on his 3-stringed hockey stick!
Rounding out the Keith Dyck Band at the Park Theatre on March 25th, will be the respected recording engineer/producer and bassist Don Benedictson as well as the drummer Martin Valach-Low.
A few words about…Deuxième Take www.deuxiemetake.com
A fun and light-hearted family atmosphere…that’s what you get with Deuxième Take and its traditional French-Canadian songs.
In our book, music is spelled A-l-l-a-r-d, and our lead singer Denise Allard proves it ! At a young age Denise, along with her 11 siblings, was singing popular, religious and traditional songs in French, in English…even in Frenglish ! Not only is Denise the singer of Deuxième Take, but she will often join her friend and our pianist Monique Couture. They perform as a duo and sing at the Saturday evening mass at the Saint-Boniface Cathedral. Plus, Denise with her contagious laughter is a lot of fun!
Monique Couture is our pianist, back-up singer, occasional clarinetist…and one busy person ! She not only directs and accompanies the choir for the Saturday mass service at the Saint-Boniface Cathedral, but also teaches piano, clarinet and voice to some 40 students, no less !
Our drummer is Brian Tesch. Francophones in these parts may have seen him in recent years playing alongside Big G (Georges Couture). Brian has applied his musical trade among local circles in a number of styles : rockabilly, blues, rock and country. His subtle playing adds a touch of rhythmic finesse to Deuxième Take.
Finally, Guy Ferraton is our harmonica player. Like Brian, Guy has also accompanied Big G in the blues band Mercy Mercy, as well as in Les Vieux Loups. Guy has played in a number of musical projects locally, as well as in Québec and abroad.
Lately…
Deuxième Take has not remained idle! Since the release of its first album, titled Vive la compagnie ! in November 2007, this upbeat band has performed in many venues, including at the Festival du Voyageur (February 2008, 2009,2010) and in France (June- July 2008). In addition to its concerts locally and abroad, Deuxième Take has also appeared at the Western Canadian Music Awards in Edmonton (October 2008) as well as around Manitoba (Laurier, Portage-la-Prairie, Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Sainte-Geneviève
Plus… Deuxième Take has seen its music enter cinematic spheres. Two songs from the albumVive la compagnie ! appear on the acclaimed documentary film Mémére Métisse by local filmmaker Janelle Wookey.
Deuxième Take has just released its second album, Dans nos vieilles maisons, in October 2009, and is planning another tour in France for June 2010. The band is always more than happy to share its music, time and joie de vivre!
